How To Buy A Bicycle

The most important aspect to purchasing a bicycle is getting one that fits you and your unique body geometry. It doesn't matter if you got a good deal, a mountain bike or road bike, you won't want to ride it much if it doesn't fit. In fact, the number one reason people quit riding a bike is because of pain associated with riding the bicycle.

Because you came here first, you'll be in a great position to get a bike that fits you, your lifestyle and your budget.

1. Get Measured so that you'll know your size. For example if you want to get a mountain bike, you'll need to know if you are a size 15, 16, 17 or so on and if you want a road bike then you'll need to know if you are a 52, 53, 54 and so on. Bike shops carry bicycles in multiple sizes just for this reason. If you have short legs, get a smaller bike and if you have long legs, get a larger bike and shorten the "cockpit". Of course, the bike shop will explain all this.

Pick out your bike model after you get sized. Your size may determine if a particular model will fit you. Also, many models are sold out at different times of the year so be prepared with alternates. Many shops carry the same bikes in different sizes but common sense will tell you that if you are in the market for a $500 plus bike, then there is a 2 out of three chance you'll have to order the bike and wait for it to come in.

2. Ride the bike if you can. If you are a seasoned cyclist, then you may already know what you want or need. All bike shops are used to people coming in and riding a bike and then not buying it. In any case, whether or not you get to sample the bike at another dealership, just about any bike shop can help you get a right sized bike because it is all simple mathematics and all bike shops use the same charts.

Jamis Bikes
Certainly one of the best manufacturers of road and mountain bikes. We like them because they have great commuter, comfort and cruiser bikes made to a high standard but at prices just north of $300.
